Council considers recommendation to combine Lee’s Summit schools

LEE’S SUMMIT, Mo. (KCTV) – Recommendations have been made to the Lee’s Summit Board of Education, including a project to combine two elementary schools.

Members of the Lee’s Summit Citizens Advisory Committee met on Tuesday evening, November 19, to make recommendations for improvements to the facilities. Many of these would be financed through a possible bond issue in April 2025.

Recommendations include the consolidation of Lee’s Summit Elementary and Westview Elementary Schools and the renovation of Westview to accommodate the new students.

Members of the committee noted that the decision was made despite opposition from parents, due to a decline in enrollment at both schools.

The committee also recommended the addition of two new schools: Greenwood Elementary And Hazel Grove Elementary — as well as renovations for Pleasant Lea Middle School and Miller Park. Other recommendations include:

  • Maintenance and repairs
  • Equipment
  • Unpredictability
  • Country
  • Safety and security
  • Furniture in the classroom
  • Athletics and facilities
  • Hangar

The committee reminded community members that these are only recommended projects. The Council of Education will now discuss the projects at the Dec. 19 meeting, with a vote expected. These recommendations will only then be final.

The Citizens Advisory Committee is established by the Board of Education and consists of parents, staff, community members and administrators.
