Next phase of road bridge project postponed

The next phase of a road bridge project in Surrey has been postponed.

Guildford Borough Council (GBC) said work on the Ash Road Bridge project is now expected to start in December and the bridge will “open in the new year”.

The next phase involves implementing a diversion route for cars and light vehicles until the bridge opens. The opening date will be confirmed as soon as possible, the municipality said.

The bridge has been named Chester Bridgeafter the council allowed the public to vote on its name.

The name refers to the Chester Arms pub which was located near the station and named after the Chester family who lived nearby in Poyle Park.

The bridge will replace the need for vehicles to use a level crossing in Ash, which the council previously said closes “up to 25 minutes an hour”.

Pedestrians and cyclists can still cross the railway at the level crossing.
