Varanasi: Rajatalab Police Station the leadership Ajit Kumar Verma was attacked by locals on Saturday after his car hit an auto-rickshaw, injuring the driver near Harahua while crossing the Badagaon police station boundary.
After receiving information, ADCP Gomti Zone, Akash Patel, ACP Pindra, Prateek Kumar, ACP Rajatalab Ajay Kumar Srivastava and troops from various police stations including Baragaon reached Harahua border crossing and rescued Verma from the angry crowd of locals. Meanwhile, the injured car’s driver was rushed to DDU district hospital. Videos of the attack on Verma went viral on social media.
The ADCP said that on the complaint of the car driver, Devi Shankar Rai (55), a resident of Bhatauli village near Baragaon police station, FIR was lodged against Verma.
Meanwhile, on Verma’s request, the FIR was registered against unidentified assailants. With the help of video footage, the police tried to identify the persons who had attacked Verma to take appropriate action against them.
During the initial police investigation, it came to light that Verma, in plain clothes, was commuting in a car with his family. As he passed Harahua intersection, Rai pulled his car in front of his car at a bend. Before Verma could stop his car, it hit the car and Rai was seriously injured.
As Verma got out of his car, a crowd gathered near Rai and attacked him, leading to chaos at this busy intersection. Despite Verma repeatedly saying that he was a police officer at the police station, the mob continued to attack him in the presence of his family members.
Baragaon police rushed to the spot to rescue Verma. Many people in the crowd attacked Verma even in the presence of Badagaon police. After rescuing Verma, the police arranged an ambulance and took Rai to Harahua Primary Health Center from where he was referred to the district hospital and later admitted to BHU Trauma Center for proper treatment.
