The police announce a program to tackle shoplifting

Nov. 23—The Clovis Police Department announced a new program last week aimed at reducing shoplifting.

The task force, made up of retailers, law enforcement agencies and regional and national lawmakers, is called the New Mexico Organized Retail Crime Association.

“NMORCA works with local businesses and shares information about shoplifting and all organizations involved in shoplifting,” a police news release said.

“The goal is to prevent these incidents, reduce losses and avoid unnecessary price increases for goods.”

The press release stated that an operation was conducted in July that targeted two Clovis businesses.

Four people were arrested during the operation and six were issued criminal summonses for shoplifting.

“The results of this operation have proven that a coordinated effort between law enforcement and business owners can and will reduce retail crime and somewhat reduce the need for higher costs for merchandise,” the news release said.

Any retail business interested in joining NMORCA can contact the Clovis Police Department at 575-769-1921 or the Clovis Chamber of Commerce at 575-763-3435.
