Why horror game remakes have become my favorite genre

Story Highlights

  • Horror game developers have begun to focus on modernizing classic horror titles by remaking them.
  • Starting with Resident Evil 2 Remake in 2019, Capcom has been doing well with their Resident Evil remakes.
  • Motive and Bloober have also created masterclasses with Dead Space and Silent Hill 2 respectively.

Making a good horror game is much more complicated than we think, and remaking a successful horror title may be even more difficult. Not only do the developers have to add a strong horror element, but they also have to recapture the atmosphere and essence of the original. It may seem simple at first, but many modern developers can’t pull off a remake properly.

In most cases, these ‘remakes’ feel half-baked and are often a sneaky cash grab. As such, I appreciate when studios take creative liberties and putting their own spin on the remake, but only if they know what they’re doing. Fortunately, the horror genre is among the winners of this approach, and the developers seem to take great care in remaking these beloved titles.

Capcom’s brilliance with the Resident Evil remakes

Capcom has slowly become one of my favorite game developers lately – partly thanks to Street Fighter 6, but mostly because of them masterful Resident Evil remakes. They started to make an impression with their Resident Evil 2 Remake, released in 2019 – a huge success that was even nominated for Game of the Year.

They tried to ride the wave and carry the same momentum into their next remake, Resident Evil 3. However, it wasn’t as well received and most of the criticism revolved around be too short and easy and have considerable content. Fortunately, after realizing and accepting their pitfalls, Capcom tested their wits once again by attempting to remake the most critically acclaimed title in the series: Resident Evil 4.

Expectations that this remake was high were an understatement, especially for me: the charm and atmosphere of the original RE:4 were nothing short of magic, and capturing that ethos took care, dedication and luck. And then the remake came in March 2023I was blown away by the sheer detail and craftsmanship that enveloped it.

Besides a few gruesome mobs and segments, Resident Evil 4’s main selling point was its cheesiness, boss fights, and emphasis on action. The remake of the game has retained and even improved upon these factors, which really shines through Leon’s one-liners, a brand new parry system and massive upgrades to various boss battles.

Overall, despite a bumpy journey, Capcom’s remake trilogy is built with passion and perfectly executed, especially the RE4 remake. They had a clear vision for every project; They understood what made the original titles so memorable, making the final product something new while respecting the source material.

The unexpected emergence of dead space and silent hill

In addition to Capcom, Motive Studio and Bloober have also provided examples of faithfully remaking cult-classic horror titles. Let’s start with Dead spacean incredible third-person shooter originally released in 2008 that’s still fun today.

“Aliens in Space”, as a typical example British eSimis still a fun idea to explore, and Dead Space made it work with exceptional voice acting and story, a gripping atmosphere, terrifying monsters, and a catalog of fun weapons. It was a technical and narrative marvel when it first came out, and the Dead Space remake in 2023 has revived the trope again.

Aside from the stunning visuals, the remake essentially removed the clumsiness and partial clutter of the original. With his Zero G mechanic refined, it feels more polished and the AI feels more consistent rather than outright aggressive. Moreover, the freedoms you get when expanding the story are retained Isaacthe main character, at the heart of it all was a pleasant surprise for me.

Bloober is making up for Konami’s lost reputation with Silent Hill 2

Even after that gem of a title in 2023, Bloober almost topped it with the release of Silent Hill 2 in OOctober 2024. The original Silent Hill 2 holds a special place in my heart because it was the first time I really felt ‘lost’ in a gameliterally and figuratively. Part of what I wanted was for this remake to recreate the bafflement of the original.

Luckily, Bloober heard my prayers and released a game based on the eerie nature, successfully reproducing the immersive desolation I begged for. With striking visuals, improved combat, enticing exploration, and a foggy atmosphere to top it all off, this remake lived up to its hype for me and many others.

Hot take, but I believe the Silent Hill 2 remake is better than the original in some ways

At this point, Konami was a joke for years, so see how Bloober pulls them out of the hole with this title was a relief. I love it when newer studios realize the ambitions of their predecessors, and the Silent Hill 2 Remake and the Dead Space remake are ideal examples.

Conclusion

Horror games need the right setting, art style, and scares to make a worthwhile experience. Horror game remakes must execute all of the above points while recognizing and accepting the qualities of their source material. The remakes from Capcom, Bloober and Motive prove that you can not only meet these demands, but also do everything you can to surpass the original through modernity.

And now I just hope that the success of these titles encourages other horror game developers to revisit their cultural hits and bring them back for a modern audience. Now that Resident Evil, Silent Hill, and Dead Space are out of the way, I personally can’t wait to see Amnesia and Clive Barker’s Undying return with a facelift.
