Another poll worker killed in Mindanao

LANAO DEL NORTE, Philippines — Days after an election official was killed in a city in Sultan Kudarat province, another poll worker was shot dead in the Salvador city of Lanao del Norte in an incident that police suspected could be related to the elections in May next year.

According to the still-sketchy report from Lanao del Norte police, Mark Orlando Vallecer II, the acting election official of Nunungan City in the province, was shot dead by a yet-unidentified assailant in Barangay Curva in Salvador City at 2:28 p.m. on Monday. .

Vallecer, 51, a resident of Kauswagan village in Cagayan de Oro city, suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the head that led to his death, police said.

Police recovered five fired shell casings from a .45-caliber pistol and one fired slug at the crime scene.

Vallecer’s death followed Saturday’s assassination of John Nico Pandoy, acting electoral official of President Quirino, Sultan Kudarat city.

On the same day, Gladden Lim, 48, who is running for governor in Sarangani province, was shot and wounded in Cagayan de Oro city. —Lea Agonoy
