The Detroit Lions haven’t really discussed adding Daniel Jones

The Detroit Lions currently have second-year quarterback Hendon Hooker as the backup to Jared Goff, but they have been linked to a veteran passer who just hit free agency.

Reports surfaced on Sunday that the team may be interested in adding a recently waived quarterback Daniel Jonesas the Lions were among a group of other teams. Jones is reportedly interested in joining a playoff contender for the remainder of this season.

Jones was waived by the New York Giants last week and officially placed on waivers, meaning he is currently free to sign with another team. Tuesday coach Then Campbell said his name has come up in conversations, but there have been no serious discussions about adding him to the roster.

“We haven’t really talked about that yet,” Campbell said. “The name has come up, but it’s not like we’ve been talking. So I don’t want to give you a yes or no.’

As it looks now, Whore is the only backup for Goff. Hooker is in his first active season, having spent most of last year rehabbing a knee injury he suffered in college. As he was rehabbing as a rookie, this summer offered him his first opportunity to participate in NFL training camp and the preseason.

Hooker has three big-win appearances this season, completing six of nine passes for a total of 62 yards. Behind the scenes though Campbell indicated that the 26-year-old has shown development in his ability to control the offense during training.

‘He has improved. He’s progressed, which is to say, we’ve told him from day one, ‘We just need growth. We need you to grow every week.” And we gave him opportunities in practice, good after good, to run our offense and, to the best of our ability, putting pressure on him, we did that,” Campbell said. “And he’s made progress, that’s the best way to put it. Every man grows at his own pace, and he grows. And listen, when the time comes, he’s got to be ready to play. It doesn’t matter if he’s ready or not. He’ll go in there, and there’s things he’s done well and those are things that we would mention that I think he would have success with, and you would go from there.

Whore showed reasonable command of the offense through three preseason appearances, including leading the team to a pair of wins against Kansas City and Pittsburgh in the last two exhibitions.

As the season progressed, Campbell is happy with the growth shown by the young passer-by. This is especially true when it comes to the minutiae of playing the position, such as understanding the offense and commanding confidence from his teammates.

The fourth-year coach indicated the team would have confidence in Hooker if he were forced out of a game due to an injury Goff.

“Sure, sure. Any growth is good for me. That’s it. You just want to know that he’s getting better in all the little areas of playing the quarterback position,” Campbell explained. “I think there’s so many things when it comes to that. You want it all, everyone else wants it all, and it just doesn’t work that way.

“And you just want to know, go in there, direct the offense and get us in the right play. Everybody’s going to look at you and know that you know what you know,” Campbell continued. “You know your stuff and they can trust you. Will it be perfect? No. It doesn’t have to be, because there is a way we can play the game too when it counts. I feel him growing, and that is everything you can ask for.”
