easyJet announces expansion of Birmingham Airport to support 800 jobs

The company says the two additional Airbus A320 aircraft will support 800 direct and indirect jobs from next summer and provide greater connectivity for customers in the Midlands.

easyJet operated its largest ever flying program to Birmingham in the financial year 2024, flying more than 1.6 million customers to and from Birminghaman increase of 53% compared to last year. Earlier this month the company added five new routes from Birmingham, while it also added five new routes last week flights to Malta and Gran Canaria from the Midlands.

This comes as the airline publishes it Results for the 2024 financial yearin which it was delivered a 34% improvement in pre-tax profits of £610 million. This was thanks to another record summer in a row and a 56% improvement in easyJet vacations profits.

“Our continued success in Birmingham is clear evidence of the continued popularity of our flights and holidays, with customers choosing us for our trusted brand, unrivaled network and great value fares,” said Ali Gayward, easyJet UK Country Manager.

“Growing our fleet with two additional aircraft will not only support around 800 jobs, but also allow us to further capitalize on the opportunities from the continued demand we see for both leisure and business travel in the Midlands.

“We are already seizing this opportunity with the launch of new routes next summer, which will offer more customers greater choice and connectivity, and we look forward to welcoming them on board.”

The company estimates that the expansion will deliver a gross added value of £27 million to the region’s economy.

The airline opened its hub in Birmingham in March 2024, with the expansion bringing the total number of aircraft in the city to five Airbus A320. The company operates up to 280 flights a week and has flown more than six million customers to and from Birmingham. easyJet first launched flights from Birmingham in December 2007, with flights from Birmingham to Geneva.

Tom Screen, aviation director at Birmingham Airport said: easyJet launched its base from Birmingham Airport in March this year and since then the expansion of its routes has been phenomenal. With city breaks, domestic short trips, sun holidays and even flights to see Santa Claus in Lapland, the airline meets the holiday and business travel needs of our customers.

“The announcement of these two additional aircraft from summer 2025 will see even more routes and frequencies added directly from Birmingham Airport, providing customers with convenient and competitive flights and holidays.”
