Andy Murray ‘caught off guard’ after Novak Djokovic asked Brit as his coach | Tennis | Sport

Novak Djokovic has revealed that Andy Murray was blindsided when he was asked to become the Serbian’s next coach. The 25-time Grand Slam champion surprisingly announced last week that the retired British tennis star would be his next mentor after parting ways with Goran Ivanisevic earlier this year.

Speaking to Sky Sports at the Qatar Grand Prix, Djokovic said: “I have been going through a process of thinking about next season in recent months. I was figuring out what I needed at this stage of my career, because I quit with my (former) coach Goran Ivanisevic, with whom I was very successful for many years.

“It took me about six months to figure out if I need a coach and, if so, who it will be. We went over names and I realized that the best coach for me would be someone who has been through the experiences I am going through. A multiple Grand Slam winner, a number 1 in the world.

“I thought about different people and a discussion started Andy Murray appeared on my and my team’s table. We were like, ‘Okay, I’m going to call him.’ It caught him off guard a bit, because he wasn’t expecting it.

“We connected very quickly and he accepted after a few days. I couldn’t be more excited about it.”
