Why doesn’t Maharashtra have a CM a week after the results? – First post

It was another extremely interesting week in India.

Fallout from the US presidential election continues, with Donald Trump announcing additional tariffs on China, Mexico and Canada – worrying some in India.

Tension continues over who will become the chief minister of Maharashtra. This, after the Mahayuti, who returned to power last week, has still not announced her chief ministerial face.

Violence broke out in Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal with protesters and police clashing following a court-ordered sweep of a mosque. The political blame game has already begun, with the opposition accusing the BJP of playing ‘politics of hate’.

The story of an Air India pilot who committed suicide has gripped the country. Srishti Tuli, 25, was found dead in her apartment in Mumbai. The development has drawn attention to her boyfriend Aditya Pandit, who has now come under the scanner of the authorities.

This week also witnessed the 16th anniversary of the 26/11 Mumbai attacks. We look back at the horrific attacks that killed 175 and injured more than 300, and how Ratan Tata, an Indian icon and then chairman of the Tata Group, showed incredible courage and bravery outside the Taj Hotel.

This and much more in our overview of the most important stories of the week:

1. Who will be the Chief Minister of Maharashtra? That’s what political observers in Maharashtra wonder.

The results may have been known for days, but the game of chairs has begun. While the BJP cadre is backing Devendra Fadnavis to take the top job, the Shinde Sena seems to be insisting on their man’s return as chief minister.

And then there is Ajit Pawar – fresh from his victory in an infighting against his uncle Sharad Pawar – with his faction of the NCP. Ajit is reportedly backing Fadnavis over Shine for the post. But why is this? This piece explores the
fragile history between the two men.

2. Donald Trump will return as US president in January. But America’s president-elect is wasting no time. Trump, who will become the 47th president of the United States, has already announced additional tariffs on Canada, China and Mexico.

This has led many to worry that India – which Trump has called “tariff king” and a very “major abuser” of tariffs – could be next on his hit list. But what exactly did Trump promise? And will he focus on India next?
This article will give you the basics.

3. Four people have been killed in a flare-up of violence in Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal. Police had clashed with protesters opposing a court-ordered investigation into a Mughal-era Shahi Jama Masjid. The protesters set fire to vehicles and pelted police with stones, while security personnel used tear gas and batons to disperse the crowd.

Twenty-one people, including two women, have been arrested and an investigation has been launched. But how did the violence arise? How did the chaos develop? And what is the situation now? This article
takes you to the heart of the case.

4. How and why did Srishti Tuli die? Tuli, an Air India pilot, was found dead in her apartment in Mumbai’s Andheri.

Although authorities called it a suicide, no note was found. Subsequently, Tuli’s family in Gorakphur accused her boyfriend Ankit Pandit of murder. Pandit, 27, has been arrested for abetment to suicide following a complaint from her family.

But what are the allegations against Pandit? What does Tuli’s family claim? This piece examines the case in detail.

5. Sixteen years ago, a number of locations in Mumbai were attacked by terrorists.

Members of the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) invaded Mumbai’s iconic Taj Hotel and began indiscriminately slaughtering anyone who came near. The city witnessed one of its darkest days as parts of the hotel went up in flames and smoke billowed from the dome.

Ultimately, 33 customers and staff were killed. However, there were also stories of heroism as staff helped many guests escape – even at the cost of their own lives.

This piece looks at the three terrible days at the Taj Hotel and the resilience that Ratan Tata – then chairman of the Tata Group – showed during the rescue operations.

6. For years, accusations were made about Sonia Gandhi that she was an ‘outsider’. Now it seems that another Gandhi is the target of such accusations. A petition in the Allahabad High Court claims that Rahul is a citizen of Britain.

Now, the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court has directed the Center to provide details of any action taken on the complaint. This comes as the Delhi High Court is hearing a separate case over Rahul’s alleged British citizenship by BJP leader Subramanian Swamy.

But who is the proposer? What do we know about dual nationality? And does India allow this?
Let’s take a closer look.

7. The Center said this week that it will introduce Pan 2.0. The development comes after the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, gave the green signal to the project.

Digital Personal Data Protection Bill 2023 is finally introduced in Lok Sabha amid opposition
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw made the announcement.

The project will make the permanent account number a “common business identifier” for the digital systems of all government agencies. But what do we know about the project? How will this benefit taxpayers? And what should you do?

This piece tells you everything you need to know.

8. We are all slaves to one-time pins (OTPs).

From banking to home delivery to online food ordering, nothing happens without permission from the all-powerful OTP.

But now there are reports that OTPs may be postponed until December 1. This comes as the traceability guidelines of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) come into effect.

But is this really the case? What changes has TRAI implemented? What did the body say? And do you have to worry?
