How Actress Gabrielle Union’s Met Gala Look Was Inspired by Her 5-Year-Old Daughter

A wave of excitement surrounded the 2024 MET Gala on May 6 in New York, as celebrities from around the world dressed up to the nines for the “Garden Of Time” theme. Among those was Gabrielle Union, who turned heads with a shimmering ombré number from Michael Kors, making her no less enchanting than a mermaid. Not only was the dress aesthetically appealing, but it also had adorable meaning for the 51-year-old American actress and lawyer. The union said People magazine that the dress was inspired by her daughter Kaavia’s love of mermaids.

The 5-year-old wasn’t able to attend the MET Gala, but her mom’s dress certainly captured her infectious spirit on the red carpet. The union said People magazine: “She’s a water baby, she loves water. And she said to me: ‘Mom, you look like a mermaid!'”

This year’s appearance at the MET Gala marked Union’s fifth time on the famous red carpet. The actress, best known for her roles in Bring it And 10 Things I Hate About You, walked alongside her famous NBA husband, Dwayne Wade.

Her dress, curated by designer Michael Kors, embodied a mermaid silhouette made up of fish-scale patterns in a gradient color scheme of teal and silver. She wore it with a classic and elegant bun.

In a previous interview, Union revealed that she saved some of her iconic MET Gala outfits for Kaavia. She said she stores them in a temperature-controlled storage unit to maintain the quality of the fabric.

“I have a closet full of things that I’m like, ‘I want to be able to tell this story or how I felt wearing that.’ So even if (Kaavia) never wants to wear one, she does will do. have this little piece of his mother and the stories that go with it.”

Union and Wade married in 2014 and had Kaavia James Wade via surrogate in 2018. Union considers the 5-year-old a total “water baby” who is obsessed with mermaids. Kaavia’s zodiac sign is Scorpio, which is also a water sign.
