Baton Rouge police officer helps mother give birth, both call experience a ‘blessing’

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — A Baton Rouge police officer helped a mother give birth to her newborn son Saturday.

“You are a blessed man. I need to make sure you’re well behaved,” the BRPD Corporal whispered. Jason Lee to newborn Noah, a baby boy he helped deliver.

Cpl. Lee used her badge differently this weekend while delivering a baby at Florida Boulevard and Central Thruway, an experience that 19-year-old mother Destiny Allen said was not planned for her first birth.

“I just wanted to go to the hospital. But it didn’t go as planned, did it? » asked Allen.

Originally, Cpl. Lee was flagged down on the street by Allen’s mother who was driving the vehicle as she attempted to get to an Oschner Hospital on O’Neal Lane, but due to the rush of traffic and Allen’s contractions which were getting worse, Cpl. Lee took charge of stopping the escort and assisting with the delivery.

“I got out, I parked the car, I opened the door and at the same time, you know, his head comes out. I was like, “Oh man. That’s it. It’s prime time,” Lee said.

Meanwhile, without medication and without being hospitalized, Allen said no pain was felt during the delivery. It was just the Louisiana heat.

“It didn’t hurt at all,” she said. “It was just hot.”

Cpl. Lee said when it comes to accomplishing this task, he credits the BRPD and the Army, where he served for 20 years, for preparing him for CPR training.

“I kind of turned the baby on his side and swiped his throat into his mouth and as I did, some mucus, or something came out and the baby started crying. So it was a blessing, like, ‘Look, the baby’s breathing now,'” he said.

After giving birth to baby Noah, Lee said he waited for paramedics to arrive to make sure everything was OK before taking them to Oschner on O’Neal. As the baby prepared to come home, Lee and Allen said they were just happy the little boy was healthy.

Allen also said that she would not do the experience again, but is indeed grateful that the experience happened with Cpl. Lee.

“I’m really happy it’s him and no one else. It was an experience. It was a great experience, wasn’t it? she says.

“You know, it’s good. I mean, we’ve become great friends so far. And, you know, I plan to stay in touch with them, you know, over time,” Lee added.
