Gauteng Education MEC shocked by wave of suicides

JOHANNESBURG – Education MEC Matome Chiloane says he is shocked by a spate of suicides at a Gauteng school.

Four students from Eqinisweni Secondary School in Ivory Park committed suicide within 10 days.

The first incident took place on April 26, when a Grade 10 girl committed suicide.

She was followed by another Grade 10 girl who was found dead in her home last Thursday.

On Friday, a Grade 11 boy died in hospital and on Sunday, a Grade 12 girl died on her way to a clinic.

All the students are said to have consumed poison before dying.

Chiloane says the psychosocial support unit was dispatched to support the school and community.
