FORT MYERS, Fla. (WFTX) — Fort Myers police asked people to avoid an area near City of Palms Park Monday morning because of a black bear.

The bear was in a fenced area near Broadway and Victoria Avenue. Police called Florida Fish and Wildlife and FWC officers tried for several hours to get the bear into a cage, but were unsuccessful.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Officer Adam Brown said, “Ultimately, we could see from the atmosphere here, with a lot of noise and a lot of stress added to this bear, which he didn’t seem at all interested in eating, and we decided to do so. It was probably best to act.

Mickey Rosado woke up to see his business on the news. No break-in or theft, just intrusion.

The 350-pound male Florida black bear made his way behind Rosado’s fence at Appliances To Go USA.

“I’m glad it’s here, in my backyard and not somewhere else, that it’s something good,” Rosado said.

FWC eventually tranquilized him so they could take him off the property.

“In Florida, you just don’t know what you’re going to get. One day it’s something boat-related, and then you’re out in the woods taking care of wildlife,” Brown said.

This isn’t the first time a bear has visited downtown. FWC said something similar happened a few years ago.

“A bear is a bear. You know. Even if they are shy or annoying, they can also be harmful,” Rosado said.

He’s just happy everyone is safe.

He added: “There are a lot of people who come here downtown and head to the courthouse. This could be a harmful situation.

FWC said they would move the bear out of Lee County, onto state property.

They said to be careful this time of year because the animals become more active.

Police posted a photo of the bear on Facebook shortly after someone saw it early Monday morning.
