Savannah Marshall’s trainer unhappy with late cancellation of Claressa Shields fight

Savannah Marshall’s trainer Peter Fury has expressed frustration over the timing of the cancellation of Saturday’s middleweight world title unification fight against Claressa Shields in London.

The British Boxing Board of Control has taken the decision to cancel all tournaments scheduled for this weekend out of respect for the Queen, with the historic all-female O2 Arena being her most high-profile casualty.

The decision was announced nearly two hours after the scheduled weigh-in for the contest, which promoters Boxxer said would take place behind closed doors while the status of the contest remained uncertain.

Fury tweeted: “(Savannah Marshall) hasn’t eaten in over 24 hours – it was nice to announce it early, it’s on, it’s off, etc. Not good for the fighters.”

However, Fury added his sympathy for the developers and added in response to the Council’s announcement: “When things are out of your control, we have to move forward. The most important thing right now is to show our deepest respects to the Queen and her family.”

In a statement, Boxxer said they were working towards October 15 as the new date for the competition. American Shields simply tweeted: “Yeah, I get it. »
