IN BARREL: Eastern Illinois track and field will host the 2024 Ohio Valley Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championship meet this weekend at O’Brien Field. Competition begins on Thursday, May 9 with events scheduled for 9 a.m. CT. Current events from all three days of competition will be broadcast on ESPN+.

The competition will be open to spectators, although entry will be charged each day or fans can purchase an All-Session pass. Other OVC Championship information (event schedule, ESPN+ streaming links, heat sheets) can be found at the OVC Championship central link here.

LAST WEEK: EIU sent a small group of athletes to compete in the final meet of the regular season at the Indiana Billy Hayes Invite. The Panthers had ten top-10 finishes in what was their second meeting in Indiana in three weeks.

Elijah Skutt And Porter Conroy recorded the best results of the day for the Panthers. Skutt finished fourth in the high jump with a height of 2.02 m (6′ 7.5″) while Conroy placed fifth with a mark of 1.93 m (6′ 4″).

In addition to the fifth place posted by Conroy, Adam Swanson also placed fifth, but in the 800m race with a time of 1:49.14.

Cassie Bradbury finished 14th in the javelin throw with a mark of 22.66 m (74′ 04″).

Sam Bradbury finished sixth in the discus throw with a personal best distance of 49.79 m (163′ 04″).

OEV LEADERS: Heading into this weekend’s championship, three Panthers are currently leading their respective individual events in the Ohio Valley Conference.

Sarah Carr: 1500 meters, 4:34.19

Nathan Kirby: 110 meters hurdles, 2:02 p.m.

Ramsey Hunt: Long jump, 7.89 m (25′ 10.75″)

Kirby’s time ranks 14th in the NCAA Midwest Region and Hunt’s mark ranks 3rd in the NCAA Midwest Region and 16th in the nation.

FUTURE: The NCAA West Regional will take place in Fayetteville, Ark., May 22-25.

THE HEAD COACH: James Gildon was hired as director of athletics at Eastern Illinois in August 2023. Gildon enters his first year at Eastern after becoming the fifth director of athletics in the school’s Division I history. He joins EIU after a successful stint as associate head coach at Bowling Green.
