Tom Holland says he’s ‘proud’ of ‘The Crowded Room’ amid ‘horrible’ reviews

Tom Holland hopes his TV miniseries “The Crowded Room” will resonate with fans despite negative reviews.

The 27-year-old actor appeared on Unilad’s “Get a Job” series on Friday, where he discussed the Apple TV+ psychological thriller, which he starred in and executive produced.

“It’s no secret that my show has been so horribly criticized,” he said.

Holland’s character Danny Sullivan in the series, based on the 1981 novel “The Spirit of Billy Milligan,” is arrested after a shooting at Rockefeller Center in 1979.

Indie Wire rated the show a C-, Variety called it “empty”, and CNN said the series performed “fairly mediocre to bad”. The Rotten Tomatoes score at publication is 31%.

Holland said on Unilad that he learned to be “very resilient” from being a Tottenham Hotspur fan. The football team has never won the Premier League.

The actor explained that because he learned resilience, he is much more concerned with what viewers learn from watching “The Crowded Room” than how it compares in reviews.

“I think the message of the show, which can touch on so many different topics, is that asking for help should be something that we, as a society, celebrate. It’s an act of bravery,” a- he declared.

“Standing up and asking for help is not something you should be ashamed of, and I hope this show can portray that in a way that is truthful and authentic, and most importantly, sensitive,” Holland said. “If we can somehow make people feel empowered by saying, ‘I don’t feel well, I really need help,’ then we will have done what we planned to do.”

The actor concluded that he was “incredibly proud” of “The Crowded Room.” “I think it conveys a very important message and I think ultimately it will be educational and entertaining.”

Holland previously said the role caused him psychological pressure, which is why he decided to take a year off.

He told Extra in an interview earlier this month that the role was a “challenging time” and that the series made him explore emotions he’d never felt before.

“The show broke me,” he said in the interview. “There came a point where I was like, ‘I need a break,’ and I disappeared. I went to Mexico for a week, hung out on a beach, and laid out. I’m taking a year off now and that’s a result of how difficult this show is.”
