Michael Lynch, right, a contractor for Kaboom! play equipment, is working with PSRC school board member Vonta Leach to install equipment Saturday at a new play space near Lumberton Junior High School.

LUMBERTON — School officials, community leaders and volunteers joined forces Saturday to install a new public playground adjacent to Lumberton High School.

The supplied Kaboom play equipment was assembled in just a few hours, thanks to the many hands who came together to help install the colorful and interactive play area.

Designed by Kewanda Merritt, founder and CEO of CONNECT Community Inc. in Lumberton, the new playground is intended for everyone in the surrounding area. She said the project came about when she learned there was no public play place for more than 200 children aged 5 to 12 in a 5-mile area.
