Phil Gould shuts down ‘unfair’ Dylan Edwards suggestions; NSW Blues, State of Origin selection, fullback position

Phil Gould shuts down ‘unfair’ Dylan Edwards suggestions; NSW Blues, State of Origin selection, fullback position

Phil Gould has cast doubt on Dylan Edwards’ chances of making his State of Origin debut, saying it would be “extremely unfair” for NSW to select him on the wing.

While the full-back debate has been a hot topic over the first two months of the NRL season, the form of outgoing number 1 and captain James Tedesco has seen the Roosters star remain in the box office for the series opens June 5.

Edwards, along with Tom Trbojevic, have also been touted as potential full-back options, but it seems more likely that the latter will line up in the centers.

Question marks are now being raised over whether all three men could fit into Michael Maguire’s squad, with suggestions Edwards could slot in on the wing as he did for Australia last year at the Pacific Championships.

However, in the latest episode of Wide World Of Sports’ Six tackles with Gusthe former Penrith boss admitted his concern about playing Edwards out of position.

“He could do the job… but I think it would be completely unfair to Dylan Edwards on his first Origin venture,” Gould said.

“If they decide he should be on the Origin side, then he should be at fullback.

“He could definitely play on the wing, he would be a great number 14 – he can play anywhere. I’m not saying he couldn’t do it, but I’m saying it would be unfair to do so.

“If he’s going to be judged, be judged as a fullback. He’s absolutely perfect for Origin, but if they have to pick him, pick him as a fullback so you can see the best in him.”

Edwards leads the NRL in total running meters this season and ranks in the top five for tackle breaks, with his work rate placing him among the best full-backs in the competition.

The 28-year-old, who has been overlooked for Origin duties in the past despite a litany of his Panthers teammates playing for the Blues, could become one of the unluckiest players to miss out on selection if Maguire stays strong with Tedesco. .

Gould remained adamant the former Rabbitohs and Tigers head coach would throw a few curveballs ahead of the opening clash against the Maroons.

“I think people might be shocked by the selection of this Origin team,” he said.

“It’s a new look at it, they’ve lost a few years in a row and I don’t think Michael Maguire is loyal to any particular combination.

“I know he’s spoken and interviewed a lot of people – he’s been making the rounds.

“This first team could shock everyone.”
