Spanberger’s Statement on Voting to File a Motion to Rescind and End Marjorie Taylor Greene’s Mayhem

Congressman: “We have too much work to do to waste time on petty political games”

WASHINGTON DC — U.S. Rep. Abigail Spanberger today released the following statement after voting against U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s (R-GA-14) effort to throw the U.S. House of Representatives into chaos.

“Since January 2023, this dysfunctional Republican majority in the House of Representatives has depended on responsible Democrats to pass bipartisan legislation in the House of Representatives, keep our government running smoothly, and get things done. Since President Johnson took the gavel – and throughout former President McCarthy’s tenure, extremist voices in their conference have attempted to paralyze Congress by threatening the President with their demands.

“In the midst of this circus, House Democrats have been the adults in the room. We worked on all sides to achieve our most urgent priorities: providing the votes needed to deliver long-overdue aid to our allies in Ukraine, conveying defensive support to Israel, sending vital humanitarian aid to civilians in Gaza and the West Bank. , prevent a catastrophic default on U.S. debt, and repeatedly avoid government shutdowns that would devastate Virginia families, businesses, and the economy. Serious lawmakers know we still have a long to-do list that includes fixing our broken immigration system, reauthorizing the FAA, combating the influx of fentanyl into our communities, and passing a bipartisan Farm Bill. We have too much work to do to waste time on petty political games.

“Today, I voted against Rep. Greene’s attempt to neutralize Congress. Last month, I made it clear that I would take this action in the event that Rep. Greene attempted to penalize the President for doing the right thing: providing urgent aid to Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan. President Johnson must meet this moment with renewed determination to maintain a functioning Congress capable of producing bipartisan results for the American people.
