Official language status of Bhojpuri: NDA remains silent on demand for official language status for Bhojpuri | Patna News

Patna: CPI-ML general secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya on Wednesday demanded inclusion of Bhojpuri in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution so that it can be accorded the status of an official language. The demand comes as the CPI-ML is contesting two seats in central Bihar – Ara and Karakat – where the majority of the population speaks Bhojpuri. “Bhojpuri is a popular language spoken in large parts of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. It must be given the status of an official language,” Bhattacharya told TOI on Wednesday, describing it as a long-pending demand of the people of the erstwhile Shahabad region, which included Bhojpur, Rohtas, Kaimur and Buxur districts. On the issue, Bhattacharya said neither Prime Minister Narendra Modi nor Union Home Minister Amit Shah had so far uttered a word on this issue during his election campaigns in the State. Bihar CM Nitish Kumar has also remained mysteriously silent on the matter. “This is sheer injustice to the Bhojpuri-speaking electorate,” the CPI-ML general secretary said. Dumraon MLA Ajit Kumar Singh has also been raising this demand at regular intervals. “I raised this issue in the Assembly, but the Nitish government turned a deaf ear to our request. This issue is emotionally attached to Bhojpuri speaking people,” Singh told a section of media.
