MTA announces completion of modernization project and new connections between Orange and Rockland counties and New York

Metropolitan Transportation Authority officials announced Friday the completion of a modernization project aimed at improving Metro-North reliability as well as the start of new connections between Orange and Rockland counties and New York City .

Metro-North’s Harmon Shop is now a state-of-the-art facility after decades of work dating back to 1983, when the Metro-North railroad inherited the site.

“It took a long time,” said Janno Lieber, MTA president and CEO. “The Harmon Shop was totally inadequate. And now, after 23 years and five MTA capital programs, it’s finally done.”

Lieber added that the project is part of the next phase of his MTA investment program.

“The next capital program must seriously invest in Metro-North,” he said.

As for the new connections from Orange and Rockland counties, officials added that there is ferry service for commuters, as well as discounts on parking and discounted buses provided by the New York State to help people west of the Hudson River.
