Grange shocked and saddened by the death of drummer Desi Jones

KINGSTON, Jamaica — Culture Minister Olivia Grange has expressed shock and sadness following the death of famed drummer Desi Jones.

Jones died suddenly on Saturday.

Grange, who described him as one of Jamaica’s most talented, gifted and loved musicians, spoke about his life, including the professional relationship they shared.

“Desi was a founding member of the group Chalice, then formed his own group, Skool, in 1988. I became his manager when he formed Skool, and it was one of the best artist-manager relationships I have known in the industry, which I have been a part of for many years,” explained Grange.

“Jamaica has truly lost one of its greatest musical talents. Desi was a musician whose skills transcended musical boundaries and, above all, he took the time to advance young artists, regardless of their development or their instrument,” added the minister.

Jones, who died aged 65, was recognized by the government in 2019 for his contribution to the development of Jamaican music in the genres of reggae, show music and jazz.

“I would like to express my condolences to his widow Judith, his son Joshua and his daughter Jodie, as well as to the entire local and international music fraternity. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” Grange said.
