Cemeteries ready for Memorial Day ceremonies

Veterans, volunteers and cemetery employees have been working hard to ensure area cemetery grounds are ready for Memorial Day on Monday.

Football players from Edgewood and Lakeside high schools showed up early Sunday morning to lay flags at the graves of dozens of veterans at Edgewood Cemetery in Ashtabula Township.

The event was coordinated by the Ashtabula American Legion. Organizers asked the football players to take a look at the gravestones of the men and women on which they placed flags to get a sense of some of the details of the soldier’s life.

At Greenlawn Memory Gardens, an Echo Taps Armed Forces Day ceremony saw flags already in place last weekend.

Employees at area cemeteries have been working to cut grass and beautify graves as people prepare to visit their loved ones’ graves this Memorial Day weekend.
