Olympiacos and Fiorentina meet this evening in the final of the Europa Conference League.

Fans are shocked after learning about the prize money for the Europa Conference League winners.

Greek side Olympiacos and Serie A side Fiorentina face off in the Europa Conference League final this evening.

Olympiacos beat Aston Villa to reach the final, which takes place in Athens, Greece, while Fiorentina beat Club Brugge to book their place.

But the winner of this season’s Europa Conference League stands to win just €5m (£4.3m) in prize money.

The runner-up will pocket €3 million (£2.6 million).

Prize money from Europe’s third-tier club competition set social media ablaze as fans questioned whether it was worth it.

One X user wrote: “A very small beer in the grand scheme of things. The question must be asked: is it worth the risk of player injury and fatigue?

A second claimed: “The prize money is nothing compared to the trophy itself. »

A third added: “That doesn’t even cover two players’ salaries.”

Fiorentina, who lost to West Ham United in the Europa Conference League final last season, will look for redemption against Olympiacos and Italian football expert James Olympiacos believes they have all the motivation needed to win this season’s trophy.

“Fiorentina have a reputation for being absurdly unlucky in Europe, especially in European finals dating back to the 1960s,” he told TNT Sports.

“Apart from the problems Olympiacos pose as a team, when Fiorentina found out they were facing an Athens team in the final, it was like entering a lion’s den.

“Even though they’re not playing in their own stadium in Piraeus, it’s essentially a home final for them. You’re going to play in a pretty hostile atmosphere, even with the allocation Fiorentina have, which is between 7 000 and 8000. So handling this kind of occasion is going to be huge.

“Jose Luis Mendilibar – who won the Europa League with Sevilla last year – has done an extraordinary job with Olympiacos to get them this far.

“But Fiorentina will have to appease the demons of last year. They were the better team against West Ham in the final in Prague.

“I think losing both the Coppa Italia final and the Europa Conference League final last season was another motivating factor to come back to this final and make amends.”
