Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is heading into formal contract talks to become one of the highest-paid bosses in the Premier League.

The Spaniard is in the final 12 months of his existing contract, but all parties are confident a deal for Arteta to stay will be reached.

Not only will Arteta’s new terms be the most lucrative Arsenal have ever offered a manager, but the 42-year-old will also be propelled to the top of the country’s highest-paid coaches.

Pep Guardiola earns £20m per season at Manchester City and Arsenal are ready to bring Arteta’s salary closer to that figure.

Either way, Arteta will see his earnings skyrocket from his current salary of £9 million per season.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta begins formal contract negotiations with the club.
Arteta’s current contract with the Gunners runs until the end of next season, but the club are confident of extending his stay.

The former City assistant coach finds himself in a strong position to negotiate a big contract given his status as one of the best young managers in Europe.

Indeed, the project he led at Arsenal is widely regarded as one of the most exciting on the continent, with the club’s operations geared towards him remaining at the helm of the club in the long term.

Arsenal are set to bring Arteta’s salary closer to that of Pep Guardiola’s £20million-a-year salary, which makes the Man City boss the highest-paid in the country.

As well as salary discussions, all parties will also outline their ambitions for the club’s future, with the aim of cementing its place among Europe’s elite teams.

Preliminary informal discussions over a new deal have taken place but are expected to accelerate once Arteta and sporting director Edu return from their respective holidays.

Meanwhile, Arsenal are being kept up to date with developments regarding the future of Red Bull Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko, while Bruno Guimaraes and Douglas Luiz are among the club’s central midfield targets.

Any decision for Guimaraes or Luiz could depend on Thomas Partey leaving the club.
