Fresh fruits and vegetables offered weekly in East Montco

The Jenkintown Food Cupboard has teamed up with Pennypack Farm and Horsham Education Center to provide the food.

EASTERN MONTGOMERY COUNTY, PA —The Jenkintown Food Cupboard now offers customers fresh fruits and vegetables every week.

The cabinet teamed up with Pennypack Farm and Educational Center in Horsham, where planting took place this spring.

“We’ve been very busy this past week planting all the different summer vegetables! The team has been planting all kinds of tomatoes and squash,” the Pennypack Farm & Education Center said on Facebook.

One photo shows two workers planting tomatoes by hand because the soil was too wet to drive the transplanter and tractor.

“When this happens, we deploy the spacer wheels by hand and drill the holes,” the message read. “Then we connect hoses to the transplanter tanks which are filled with water and fish emulsion fertilizer. We then water each hole before planting.”

The first round of tomatoes includes varieties such as Carbon, Chef Choice Bicolor, Lemon Boy, Celebrity Plus, Big Beef and Chef Choice Orange.
