He said police said they were suspects or persons of interest in the murder of their eldest child.

“At this time we cannot make any speculation, so I ask everyone to be patient and pray that this family has the strength to endure this ordeal.

“He is still in pre-trial detention and it is just a matter of completing the investigation. We do not yet know who else will be charged,” he said this morning.

If the investigation is completed, he added, the case will be transferred to the public prosecutor, and at that time the main suspect will be identified.

Asked about new evidence or conflicting statements from the parents, the attorney said both factors could have contributed to their arrest.

When meeting the couple, Mahmud said, they looked very shocked and did not expect to become suspects in the murder case of their own child.

“I also expected this and I think the whole of Malaysia is shocked by this development, but I am confident that the police have requested remand to complete their investigation.

“We will give the police the space to conduct their investigation transparently and thoroughly in the interests of justice,” he said, adding that the pre-trial detention could be extended after it ends next Friday.

On December 6 last year, Zayn Rayyan was found dead in a stream near Idaman Apartment area in Damansara Damai at 10 p.m.

The victim’s body was discovered by a group of residents who were carrying out a search operation just 200 meters from his building where he had been reported missing two days previously.

Police confirmed the victim was believed to have been murdered, with autopsy results revealing criminal-related injuries to the child’s neck and body.
