Pence warns Trump conviction sends ‘terrible message’ to world about US justice system

Former President Donald Trump was convicted on all 34 counts of falsifying business records to hide the secret payment. Trump maintained his innocence and said he would appeal the decision. He will be sentenced on July 11.

“The conviction of former President Trump on politically motivated charges is an outrage and a disservice to the nation,” Pence said on Fox News. “For millions of Americans, this was just a political prosecution by a Manhattan prosecutor who ran for office pledging to indict the former president, and this conviction undermines confidence in our justice system.”

He continued: “This conviction also sends a terrible message to the world about the American justice system and only divides us further at a time when the American people are fighting against the failed policies of the Biden administration, both at home and abroad. ‘abroad. »

Pence added that he believed the decision would be overturned on appeal. Pence’s response makes him the latest Republican to comment on the matter, but his remarks are consistent with other public statements on the matter. Pence previously expressed opposition to Trump’s indictment last year, saying it was “nothing more than a political prosecution.”

The former vice president’s comments also come after Pence said he would not vote for Trump in November. He also condemned President Joe Biden, but it is unclear who he will support instead. Pence launched his own presidential bid against his former boss last year.
