Arali factory: HC orders govt to consider representation | Cochin News

Kochi: The HC has asked the state government to look into the plea seeking to ban the use, transportation and cultivation of ‘Arali’ (Oleander) plant and take appropriate action in the matter. The bench comprising Chief Justice AJ Desai and Justice VG Arun was considering a plea of C Girishadas of Kollam following the death of Surya Surendran who had accidentally consumed leaves of ‘Arali’ plant on April 29. She had spat out the leaf but the juice of the leaf might have caused a heart attack which ultimately led to her death, the petitioner contended. Although the Malabar Devaswom Board has banned the use of ‘Arali’ flowers in its temples, they are still used for puja rituals. Tonnes of flowers are transported from TN to Kerala. The public use of Arali flowers posed a danger to people, especially children, who were unaware of their toxic nature. Representations made to the police chief, the director of health services and the health secretary yielded no results, the petition states.
