Joliet’s Billie Limacher Bicentennial Park and Theater begins its 50th season of free concerts on the Hill at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, June 6, and the series continues every Thursday evening in June, July and August.

The grand opening lineup is a tradition: the Metropolitan Youth Symphony Orchestra, the champion Joliet American Legion Band.

Find your favorite lawn chair and blanket to relax on the large waterfront hillside at 201 W. Jefferson St. in downtown Joliet.

Concessions will be available, courtesy of Lightning Concessions, who will be bringing out the grill for the opening concert on June 6.

A cash bar will also be available, including a special drink “The Golden Nifty Fifty” – lemonade, choice of alcohol and a sprinkle of edible gold flakes, according to the Bicentennial Park release. A version will also be available for those under 21. No outside alcohol is permitted.

Picnic baskets are welcome. To celebrate 50 years and what the concerts have meant to the community, people are invited to share their special memories.

Crowds listen to a summer concert on the hill at Joliet's Billie Limacher Bicentennial Park. The summer concert series celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2024.

Audience members can stop by the welcome table to pick up a “Share a Memory” card, which will be shared online and displayed in the lobby throughout the concert season, according to a release from Bicentennial Park. People also choose to leave a short video memory to share online. Newspaper articles and photos from the first concerts, from 1974, will also be on display.

“We are grateful to celebrate 50 years of art in downtown Joliet. Recent beautification efforts by the City of Joliet have truly transformed the park with flowers and landscaping. It’s wonderful to see the dedication to the spaces uniting the community,” park director Lori Carmine said in the release.

Free parking is available in the park and south of Jefferson Street. For more information, visit, [email protected] or call 815-724-3761.
