Lexi Thompson couldn’t contain her emotions as she spoke to reporters after her run at the US Women’s Open ended earlier than expected.

After making a bogey putt for her final shot of the tournament, Thompson walked away to applause. As she did so, a fan shouted, “We’re going to miss you, Lexi!” Facing reporters after her tour, the 29-year-old was asked what she would tell her younger self about the journey she’s been on over the past 17 years.

“I would probably say just enjoy life,” Thompson said, as his voice trembled at the thought of his impending retirement. “Just be grateful for everything you have in your life. Enjoy every experience you have just by being here.”

Thompson had been competing since the age of 12, becoming the youngest golfer to qualify for the US Women’s Open, in 2007. That record was broken in 2014 by Lucy Li, who made her tournament debut at the age 11.

The former major champion turned professional at age 15 and, shortly after, won her first – and so far only – major championship at the 2014 Kraft Nabisco Championship at age 19. She remains among the youngest LPGA major winners in history, demonstrating how skilled she was at a young age.

However, Thompson shocked the golf world by announcing that she would retire at the end of the 2024 season. As she spoke to reporters after her tour, it was clear that the decision to retire weighed on her.
