Dewey Beach traffic stop leads to arrest for drunk driving, weapons violations – WGMD

Dewey Beach Police, while on patrol, spotted a vehicle without headlights on shortly after midnight Saturday on Coast Highway and conducted a traffic stop. The driver of the vehicle, Darren Jeffcoat, 31, of Smyrna, did not have a driver’s license but presented a Delaware identification card. And a computer check showed he had three outstanding arrest warrants for traffic violations. A search revealed a loaded 9mm firearm was found on the rear floorboard of the vehicle, along with a small amount of suspected marijuana. He was taken to the Dewey Beach Police Department for processing. Jeffcoat is charged with the following offenses:

  • 2 counts of possession of a deadly weapon by a prohibited person
  • carrying a concealed deadly weapon
  • 3rd infraction misdemeanor DUI
  • possession of a firearm under the influence
  • failure to turn on headlights when necessary

Jeffcoat is being held at SCI, bail is set at $16,650
