There is no denying that earning a doctorate is an incredible achievement. But there are certain doctors who take their pride in this achievement to the extreme!

I mean, I’m not trying to be rude, but if we’re at a bar having a beer, I’m not calling you “Doctor” and asking you to pass me the peanuts!

Unfortunately for this user, his recently graduated girlfriend insisted on calling her father “Doctor”, and soon wanted her family to call him by the same title!

Was he discrediting her by asking her to stop? Decide for yourself!

My girlfriend recently received her Ph.D. I am obviously very happy for her and proud of her.

Since then, she greets my father by calling him “Doctor” (last name).

Although he has a doctorate, no one ever called him that and he told me it made him uncomfortable.

But when OP told Dr. Girlfriend to stop, she flat out refused!

I asked him not to call him that.

She says she wants to be polite and call him by his title.

She now wants to be called doctor when my parents greet her too.

And while OP didn’t want to take anything away from her success, he thought her request was a little ridiculous.

I understand it’s a huge accomplishment, but I don’t think she should expect my parents to call her doctor?

And she shouldn’t call my dad a doctor if he asks her not to.

She thinks I’m trying to minimize what she did, but that’s not the case.

AITA?

In what world would your partner’s parents call you doctor? If you want them to really like you, you might want to try getting off your high horse!

Reddit said that outside of a formal setting, having to be addressed as “Doctor” is ridiculous!

And this user said that just because OP isn’t comfortable with their actions doesn’t mean they aren’t proud of their accomplishment.

Many suspected that OP’s girlfriend only started calling her dad “Doctor” so others would do the same to her!

Finally, this user said it wasn’t respectful to her, it was just plain rude, especially if the OPs specifically asked her not to do it!

Looks like this doctor needs a head exam!
