Meet the famous ‘Lobster Lady’ who just turned 104 and has no plans to stop

Society constantly tells us, “There is a right time to do everything.” Time and time again, some living legends remind us not to listen to anyone who says age defines who we are. Rather, the concept of age, outside of a doctor’s office, is nothing more than a trap designed to keep us from doing awesome things. Case in point: Virginia “Ginny” Oliver, the iconic “Lobster Lady” from Maine, USA, recently turned 104 and has no plans of stopping. Why not take inspiration from his book?

Who is the 104-year-old “Lobster Lady”?

At 104, she would be Maine’s oldest living lobster fisherman, and she has no plans to close up shop. “I’m still the boss,” she said.

Virginia first learned the ropes of lobster trapping at the age of eight after working alongside her father and brother. This year marks the 96th birthday of Maine’s oldest lobster fisherman, reported CBS. “All my life I’ve been doing this stuff,” she said in a 2023 interview with The Washington Post. “I never get seasick.”

Today, she is something of a living legend, a local celebrity and even features as a subject in children’s picture books. When asked when she would retire from lobstering, Virginia answered without hesitation, “When I die,” according to her interview with GTME in 2021. She added: “Just keep going. »

According to various interviews, Virginia, whose late husband was also a fisherman, begins her day by donning fishing gear, boarding a boat and spending hours catching lobsters.. Today, his son Max, aged 80, accompanies him lobster fishing. She manages the boat and bands the lobsters, then they sell their catch to the Spruce Head Fisherman’s Co-Op, according to reports.

She raised four children with her husband, each of whom was a lobster. She lived her entire life on the same street where she was born in 1920, according to News Center Maine.
