Erik ten Hag has revealed there is still no agreement with Manchester United over a new contract following the club’s decision to keep the Dutchman in charge at Old Trafford.

After a poor Premier League campaign where United finished in eighth place, Ten Hag were under increasing pressure before an FA Cup final victory over Manchester City gave them hope.

Following this success at Wembley, United conducted an in-depth end-of-season review during which they contacted a number of potential new managers. Sir Jim Ratcliffe has held talks with Thomas Tuchel in recent weeks, but United’s hierarchy have decided the former Chelsea and Bayern Munich boss is not the right man for the club’s new structure.

Last week it emerged that United had made the decision to stick with Ten Hag, planning to discuss extending his contract at the club. His current contract runs until next June and includes an option for an additional 12 months.

However, the former Ajax boss claims the new contract is not yet done.

Ten Hag was part of Dutch broadcaster NOS’s expert team for England’s Euro 2024 clash against Serbia on Sunday evening. He explained that after weeks of radio silence over his future at Old Trafford, United officials “turned up at his door” to tell him they wanted him to stay.

“It was an eventful season,” Ten Hag said. “I was able to take a little vacation. This week, United suddenly showed up at my door. That they would like to continue with me.

“In any organization, it is wise to evaluate and draw conclusions. Manchester United have this. The new management then decided.

On United’s interviews with other managers, he continued: “Everyone has heard that they have spoken to several candidates. In the Netherlands such a thing is not possible and is not even not permitted.

“You’re not allowed to just talk to another club. as long as there is a current head coach. In England, it’s different. Manchester United told me they spoke with Tuchel, but ultimately came to the conclusion that they already had the best manager.

United hope to tie Ten Hag to a new deal in the coming weeks. Asked for an update on these negotiations, Ten Hag added: “We talked well and various topics were on the table.

“The conclusion is that we will sit down to extend the contract. We still have to reach an agreement, because it has not been easy. Let’s talk about it some more.
