17 Gen X Memes for the Generation Caught in the Middle

“Generation X” took its name in the early 1990s from an article that became a book by Canadian writer Douglas Coupland. And ever since, they’ve been fighting or adopting labels like “lazy” and “cynical.” That is, until Millennials come of age and all that “you kids today” energy from older generations starts piling on them. Little by little, Generation X discovered that they were no longer called lazy… they were no longer even mentioned at all. And that suits them very well.

Here are 17 memes that will resonate with almost anyone born between 1965 and 1980.

Generation X essentially invented “Whatever.”

Until recently, Gen Xers sat back and watched Millennials and Baby Boomers eat each other out with an amused, non-confrontational attitude. But recently, Millennials and Generation Z have become aware of their presence and have dubbed them “the Karen generation.”

They seem to be adopting Karen’s thing.

Although I’m pretty sure the “Karen” thing isn’t complimentary – like BuzzFeed To put it this way, this is meant to connect with someone who is “the middle-aged white mom who always asks for the manager and wonders why kids are so obsessed with their identities”, a lot of people landed on a different Karen to represent the generation: the martini-loving, wise-crazy Karen Walker.

Do it right!

Well (expletive) me gently with a chainsaw, she’s right. The 80s cult classic starring Winona Ryder and Shannen Doherty is truly the Mean Girls of the 80s and a much better term than Karen.

The contempt is mutual…

Most of my Gen X friends have Gen Z kids and they are very relaxed with each other intergenerationally. However, Gen X is the generation most likely to have baby boomer parents and younger millennial children, and this meme seems to resonate with a group of Xers of a certain age.

Many Xers enjoy the “OK boomers” quarrel.

The media tends to ignore Generation X as a whole – as a few upcoming tweets demonstrate – and that pleases Generation They were latchkey kids whose parents both worked long hours, so they were used to being somewhat neglected.

Quite an atmosphere.

Although this table doesn’t list generation names, the approximate age ranges are all there…except for a big gap between 34 and 54 where apparently no humans were born? Poor Gen Xers (and some older Millennials) apparently don’t have political beliefs worth examining.

Do not forget me…

If Millennials are the “burnout generation,” I guess Generation X is truly the invisible generation. I’m starting to feel inspired to write a science fiction novel in which everyone born between 1966 and 1980 inhabits a completely different dimension.

There are advantages to being invisible…

Being in a romantic relationship – or getting lucky – has never been easy for Generation X. They were the generation most affected by the AIDS epidemic when it came to anxiety over casual sex. While baby boomers had the free love of the late ’60s, Generation X was all about safe sex, which generally meant less sex. And even when they had casual, safe sex, ’90s singles had to meet people the old-fashioned way or, if they met online, they felt ashamed. Now, online dating is the norm.

When Generation X replaces the baby boomers.

This is probably an optimistic view, because the truth is that there are “baby boomers” in every generation, and many of them tend to work their way into positions of power. Let’s call this the best case scenario, though.
