Former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley announced Sunday that she lost her father on Father’s Day. Professor Ajit Singh Randhawa passed away on June 16, as stated in a social media post. Haley fondly described him as “the smartest, the sweetest, the kindest”, alongside a heartbreaking photo of her hugging her late father. Earlier in March, the first Indian-American woman to serve in a presidential cabinet announced her departure from the Republican presidential race by wishing Donald Trump “good luck.”

Former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley’s father, Ajit Singh Randhawa, died on Father’s Day.

“My heart is heavy knowing he is gone,” Haley said on X (formerly Twitter.) “He taught his children the importance of faith, hard work and grace. He was a amazing husband for 64 years, a loving and wonderful grandfather and the best father to his four children. He was such a blessing to us all. Happy Father’s Day, Dad, we will miss you very much. she reflected on her career as a teacher and father. Nikki Haley’s father was previously diagnosed with cancer. Both of Haley’s parents, who were wealthy natives of India, moved to rural South Carolina in 1969.

Who was Professor Ajit Singh Randhawa?

After immigrating to the United States, Haley’s father found a new career as a professor at Voorhees College. Her mother, Raj Kaur Randhawa, also entered the workforce, teaching sixth grade social studies before venturing into entrepreneurship. Her gift shop eventually grew into a successful million-dollar fashion boutique.

Throughout Haley’s political journey, her father has always been there to support her. He was also present when his presidential bid kicked off in Charleston last year, a pivotal moment in his journey to the White House. In January, she paused her campaign and returned to South Carolina to visit her father, who was battling cancer. Then, in March, she said goodbye to her presidential candidacy.

“The time has now come to suspend my campaign. I said I wanted Americans to make their voices heard. I did this. I have no regrets,” Haley said in announcing his withdrawal. “It is now up to Donald Trump to win the votes – to those in our party and beyond who did not support him.
