The Ohio State coaching staff was busy as the recruiting calendar entered a new period.

As soon as Friday became Saturday, college coaches were allowed to start calling prospects from the class of 2026. Some phone calls result in new scholarship offers. Some give rise to plans for future visits. Some are just ways to let players know they’re on the radar.

The Buckeyes have a 2026 commitment in five-star guard Marcus Johnson from Garfield Heights, Ohio. Otherwise, it’s unclear exactly how big the class will be. On June 10, coach Jake Diebler told reporters that the days of having to recruit four or five freshmen were likely gone to an era where the Buckeyes would add significant pieces through the transfer portal as well as the pathway traditional recruitment preparation.

“It’s hard for me to imagine the current landscape from when there were first grade classes of five,” he said. “There may be outlier years where this is necessary. More importantly, you’re trying to project the impact guys can have next year. If they are freshmen who can do it, great. If it’s transfers, that’s fine.
