IIt’s an understatement to say that there’s a lot going on in the world right now.

Between continued violence in the Middle East, protests and counter-protests on college campuses, the criminal trial of a former president, the upcoming presidential election, the ongoing invasion of Ukraine, natural disasters and more even more so, the general public is naturally overstimulated and tense.

For many, music offers an escape, an opportunity to turn off your brain and disconnect from the real world, but the new single from lyricist Abe the Kid and producer Drinkabir “WAR» asks listeners to think a little harder. With this song, the duo uses music as an archive, capturing an ever-present feeling in this present moment in a society full of division and unrest. In the past, musicians have often played a dual role in mainstream culture, providing comfort to the masses and being the voice of those unable to express their innermost thoughts. “WAR” exists in a hybrid category that most resonates with Gen Z’s sprawling attention span; media can no longer exist in one definitive genre and must cater to multiple areas of interest, which highlights the heart of the song’s dissonance around the function of morality in entertainment.

Departing from a tradition of dry, open preaching in conscious rap, or other socially relevant music, “WAR” primarily prioritizes intriguing sonic music to support a message. Furthermore, rather than using their musical talents primarily as a platform to advance a specific cause, Abe and Drinkabir avoid moralizing and explore the internal conflicts of young artists coming of age in a time of great confusion and polarization. With satirical refrains and an interlude of Vice President Kamala Harris’ now-viral meme, the duo carefully crafts a musical experience grounded in the present.

Producer and instrumentalist Drinkabir ensures smooth production for Abe the Kid, allowing him to seamlessly blend into various streams and tackle diverse and complex topics. The melodic choruses that drive the rhythm create a gentle soul that Abe fits into with a relaxed and subdued delivery. This approach creates an air of warmth in the song, which allows the listener to digest the carefully crafted verses. Slowly, as it builds in intensity, the depth of the song becomes evident as the floating production strikingly juxtaposes the weighted subject matter of Abe’s lyrics. The music and lyrics create a brilliant yet haunting soundscape demanding multiple listens.

Unlike many strategic artist partnerships that exist solely through online exchanges, this collaboration was born from several hours spent in Abe the Kid’s studio in Chinatown, All Street. The duo’s commitment to music has forged a deep bond and friendship that strengthens their musical output.

Earlier this year, the duo released the single “Pigeon” with rapper Blkchrst face-to-face in the studio. As native New Yorkers, Abe the Kid and Drinkabir have a deep relationship, as they frequently perform together and support each other as they navigate the New York independent music scene.

As a member of the LES-based artist collective All Street, Abe the Kid continues to build his studio in the collective’s media space and art gallery at 119 Hester Street, where Abe also created all of the visuals support for “WAR”.

Drinkabir has played a crucial role in the development and growth of All Street’s trajectory in the music scene, as he has played and featured many artists in this space.

Both artists surely have plenty more thought-provoking music to come as they continue to experiment in the studio.
