Lewis won a total of nine Olympic gold medals, beginning his journey at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, where he won the 100 m, 200 m, 4 × 100 m and long jump events.

Further gold medals followed at the 1988 Seoul Olympics (100m, long jump), the 1992 Barcelona Olympics (long jump and 4x100m relay) and the 1996 Atlanta Olympics (long jump).
