Ducks set to face Purdue Boilermakers again

Although the Oregon football team is familiar with some Big Ten opponents, the Ducks haven’t really spent much time focusing on the Purdue Boilermakers. There have been a limited number of meetings between these two teams. But, as the Oregon Ducks move up to the Big Ten, expect more frequent matchups against Purdue.

In total, the Ducks and Boilermakers have faced each other a total of three times on the field. The first meeting between Oregon and Purdue took place in 1979 and in that inaugural game, Oregon traveled to West Lafayette, Indiana only to suffer a frustrating 13-7 loss to the Boilermakers.

Fortunately, things have improved a little since then. But only a little bit.

Nearly three decades would pass before Oregon would get a chance at a rematch with Purdue. During the 2008 season, the Ducks returned to Purdue looking for some redemption for their loss nearly 30 years earlier.

And what did Oregon get? Well, technically it was a win, but it was in overtime. Purdue presented a tough challenge for the Ducks in 2008. Was 2009 better? Not really. Oregon was able to win that one by a score of 38-36 at Autzen Stadium.

The Boilermakers have been a bit of a sore spot for the Oregon football team.

The sample size here is pretty small, but the Oregon-Purdue series tells an interesting story here. The Ducks have clearly grown as a program over the years, but Purdue has been a bit of a pest. Hopefully, with the move to the Big Ten, Oregon will demonstrate the ability to really thrive against a team like the Boilermakers.
