Texas fisherman breaks world record with bass catch

Lea Anne Powell made Texas history by breaking the world record for the largest largemouth bass ever caught in her category. After months of anticipation, the International Game Fish Association (IGFA) confirmed her record, making Lake OH Ivie, the Texas reservoir, the best bass lake in America for the first time.

Powell shared her journey to getting the file verified, detailing the intensive process that included paperwork, photos, documentation and even submitting a sample online. Despite the lengthy process, Powell’s determination paid off. “It’s the squeaky wheel that makes the difference,” she said, recounting her anxious calls to the board for updates.

The record bass weighed 12 pounds, 3 ounces, making it the largest largemouth bass ever caught in the 12-pound line class. Caught on a 10-pound Seaguar Red Label line, Powell explained that this line tests up to 12 pounds, meeting the record requirements perfectly.

Powell’s passion for fishing was born from a desire to find peace after the loss of her parents in 2015. Invited by her friend Dalton Smith, a fishing guide at OH Lake Ivie, Powell did not expect to beat a world record during their trip. Using a Livescope, an underwater ultrasound tool, they spotted and brought in the enormous fish.

Powell’s story is an inspiring testimony of perseverance and passion. She encourages everyone, especially young women, to continue fishing and stay motivated despite any discouragement. “Turn those negatives into positives and let them motivate you to get out and fish,” Powell advises. Who knows ? You just might catch the next record-breaking fish!
