As July 4 approaches, Dallas Animal Services is offering microchips and ID tags to residents.

The event is designed to help owners mitigate the effects of July 4th fireworks, which can cause distress in pets and sometimes even cause them to flee.

“While fireworks can be a source of joy for some, they can be a source of terror for many pets,” Paul Ramon, interim director of animal services, said in a statement. “Our goal is to prevent the distress of a lost pet by ensuring that as many animals as possible are microchipped and tagged. This will allow us to reunite them with their owners quickly, relieving pressure on our current overcapacity situation at DAS.”

With a suggested donation of $4 to DAS, residents can receive a microchip, collar and personalized engraved ID tag for their pets. Distribution will take place July 2 and 3 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the DAS main shelter, located at 1818 N Westmoreland Road. Pets must accompany their owners to receive a microchip, but do not need to pick up a collar or ID tag. Dogs must be on a leash and cats must be kept in a carrier.

According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, fireworks “vs“Animals can become frightened and run away.” To prevent this, the AVMA recommends keeping pets indoors, in a safe, escape-proof room. Additionally, owners are advised to have recent photos of their pets and take steps to ensure the fence is secure.
