‘Silent killer’: Indian Cardiology Society releases first guidelines on high cholesterol

CHARACTERISTICS OF DYSLIPIDEMIA

The state of dyslipidemia can be characterized by:

  • High total cholesterol level in the blood

  • Increased low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol (bad cholesterol) levels

  • High triglyceride levels

  • Low high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol (good cholesterol)

This disease characterized by high cholesterol is also known as the “silent killer” because it has no symptoms. Dyslipidemia is a marker of cardiovascular diseases, such as heart attacks, strokes and peripheral artery disease.

CSI President Dr Pratap Chandra Rath said, “Dyslipidemia is a silent killer, often asymptomatic, unlike hypertension and diabetes.”
