Marblehead fireworks canceled after barge fire – Boston News, Weather, Sports

MARBLEHEAD, MASS. (WHDH) – A fireworks barge caught fire in Marblehead Harbor overnight, forcing officials to cancel their Fourth of July fireworks show.

Crews from Marblehead, Beverly and the U.S. Coast Guard responded to the scene Thursday morning.

In a message posted to X around 4 a.m., organizers of the Marblehead Fireworks Committee said the state fire marshal’s office was investigating and would not allow any fireworks displays in Marblehead until authorities figure out how the barge caught fire.

In a new message published around 11 a.m., the committee confirmed that the fireworks display and the corresponding illumination of the port will not take place this year.

The committee said no one was on board the barge when the fire broke out and no injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire remains unknown.

Officials asked anyone who received flares for the harbor lighting event to return them to the Marblehead Fire Department “as soon as possible” and said all other Fourth of July events in Marblehead will go ahead as planned this year, despite the barge fire.

“Despite this sad situation, we wish you all a happy 4th of July!” the fireworks committee said.
