Italian Foreign Ministry warns British tourists their flights are ‘cancelled’ due to heightened alerts

Holidaymakers heading to Italy are being warned that flights are being cancelled due to heightened alerts abroad. The Foreign Office has said there could be disruption to travel as some flights are being cancelled or rerouted.

Authorities have issued new alerts following the eruption of the Etna and Stromboli volcanoes, meaning no arrivals or departures are planned at Catania airport in Sicily.

In an update issued on Friday (5 July), the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) said there was an “increase in alert levels for the Etna and Stromboli volcanoes in southern Italy, and a suspension of flights to Catania airport”. It warned tourists to follow overseas advice and stay in touch with travel companies.
