Sarasota couple caught sneaking over $1000 past Walmart cameras

SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) – According to Sarasota deputies, the couple pictured above is responsible for slipping hundreds of dollars of merchandise past Walmart security cameras.

Heather and Jeremy Bettis got away with it the first time. Loss Prevention at Walmart told Sarasota Deputies that the two scammed security cameras, scanning cheap price tags, but bagging big-ticket items.

Video surveillance caught the two stealing more than $350 on Walmart self-checkout cameras, but Loss Prevention didn’t catch it until the next morning. Employees were on high alert, but they couldn’t do anything about it…until Heather and Jeremy walked in a few hours later, this time with a friend.

This time the three of them filled a cart with more than $600 worth of goods, and thanks to some fast fingers at the self-checkout, were about to walk about having paid just $18.13.

What they didn’t know was that Loss Prevention had already called 911. Deputies were on their way.

They arrived just in time to stop the trio from walking out the front door on June 29. Deputies confiscated items from the shopping cart, Jeremy’s body, Heather’s purse, and the electric shopping cart of Clayton Thompson.

Video surveillance provided proof of incidents on both days. Thompson qualified for APAD, a diversion program that lets him walk away with just a ticket. The Bettis’, however, got a free ride to Sarasota County Jail.
