Centre opposes scrapping of entire NEET-UG 2024 exam, files affidavit in Supreme Court

The Centre on Friday filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court, pleading against the cancellation of the entire NEET UG 2024 exam held on May 5, citing lack of evidence of large-scale breach of confidentiality. The affidavit states that invalidating the exam would “seriously jeopardize” the efforts of lakhs of honest candidates who appeared for the exam.

In its statement, the Centre stressed its commitment to conduct all competitive examinations in a fair and transparent manner. “The Union of India recognises that confidentiality of examination papers is the top priority of any examination and if due to any criminal activity at the behest of some criminal elements, confidentiality has been breached, the Union of India feels that the person in question should be dealt with severely and with the full force of the law to ensure that he is punished,” the statement read.

The government also stressed the need to balance competing rights, citing the importance of protecting the interests of the majority of students who do not engage in unfair practices. “Scrapping the exam in its entirety would seriously jeopardize the hundreds of thousands of honest candidates who attempted the exam in 2024,” the Centre added.

The Centre also said the CBI has been directed to probe all allegations of alleged irregularities including conspiracy, cheating, impersonation and breach of trust.
