Teresa Weatherspoon Delivers Powerful ‘Know Your Worth’ Message to Sky

The Chicago Sky are gaining momentum as they approach the midpoint of the 2024 WNBA season. Angel Reese and the Sky are coming off an 85-77 win over the Atlanta Dream and will continue their momentum when they face the Seattle Storm on Friday night. Head coach Teresa Weatherspoon noted the attention the team is receiving online and in the media and had a powerful message for her players.

Weatherspoon spoke about the team’s need to stay grounded amidst the endless buzz.

“What’s for sure is they’re doing really well. Everything that’s in the media. Everything that’s being said. You know, you’ve got to have high expectations of yourself and know who you are. When you know your worth, it doesn’t matter what other people say. You let that motivate you instead of making you angry,” Weatherspoon said before Tuesday’s Dream game.

Angel Reese has arguably received the most attention on the team since being drafted in April. As Teresa Weatherspoon mentioned, Reese has handled herself pretty well given the circumstances, but she’s still human and has had her moments of raw expression. For example, Reese expressed her displeasure with the officiating of the June 16 game against the Indiana Fever after the Sky lost 91-83.

“Watching the video, I saw a lot of decisions that weren’t made. I guess some people have a special whistle,” Reese said at the post-game press conference.

Reese is a fierce competitor, so her moments of frustration are understandable. However, on the other side of her expressive moments is an impressive display of humility and gratitude.

Despite her early success, Reese isn’t one to focus on individual accolades. When the league informed her of her 2024 WNBA All-Star nomination, she was overcome with emotion and paid tribute to her team and coaches.

“I’m so happy. I know the work that I put in. Coming into this league, a lot of people doubted me and didn’t think my game would be effective… but I trusted the process and believed in it. I’m grateful to have gotten down to seventh and be able to come to Chicago. It’s a blessing. I can’t thank my teammates and coaches enough for believing in me. I know they’re all going to come to Phoenix and support me, so I’m really happy right now,” a teary-eyed Reese said after the Dream’s win.

Additionally, if there’s anyone who takes Teresa Weatherspoon’s message of “know your worth” to heart, it’s Reese. As Reese mentioned, she works hard despite the doubts of others and herself. Reese said she’s unsure if she’ll start or play in a meaningful way heading into the 2024 WNBA season. But she’s sticking with the process and is being rewarded for it.

Weatherspoon has repeatedly attributed Reese’s relentlessness to her belief in herself. The Sky will still need Reese and the rest of her teammates to continue to believe. Chicago looks to keep its foot on the gas to stay in the playoff race midway through the 2024 WNBA season.
